To insure your building is protected from wildfires ADC has provided two checklists of information,

one from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Association)
Avoiding Wildfire Damage: A Checklist for Homeowners

and the other from the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho:Protecting Your Home From Wildland Fire.

We are also including links to their web sites for any additional information you may need.

ADC’s Alternative Building Methods and Straw Bale Building Classes also review which building methods are the most fire resistant.

ADC was pleased to offer timely and helpful information to the Cerro Grande Survivors right after the Los Alamos fire in May of 2000. Once these homeowners had a chance to reach fair settlements with their insurance companies ADC Member Firms helped some survivors to design and build new homes.

How ADC helped Los Alamos / Cerro Grande Fire survivors get ready to rebuild

May 4th, 2000 Controlled Burn Started
May 7th, 2000 Fire Out of Control due to strong winds and drought
May 10th, 2000 Fire threatening Los Alamos - the entire town is evacuated
May 11th, 2000 The town of White Rock is evacuated
May 14th, 2000 The citizens of White Rock are allowed to go home
May 15th, 2000 Los Alamos citizens whose neighborhoods were not burned are allowed to go home

ADC Member Firms offer to teach our Home Design and Building Classes to educate Los Alamos fire survivors about the design and building process. Survivors need credible information so they can reach fair and realistic settlements with insurance companies and begin understanding what they will need to do to rebuild their homes.
Class attendance was 30 to 40 survivors per class.

Seminars Offer Tips on Rebuilding

Much of Los Alamos was built in the 1940s and 1950s by people who weren’t as used to New Mexico’s adobe-and-stucco style. Many of the homes that burned were more typical of the East Coast: wooden structures and A-frame cabins.
So as Los Alamos rebuilds itself, some Northern New Mexico organizations are offering help in thinking about style and layout.
Architects, Designers and Contractors Referral Service - ADC for short - hopes to hold a symposium in Los Alamos with a panel of Los Alamos officials, architects and builders.
The organization, which helps match families with contractors and architects, also has some suggestions for Los Alamos about volume purchasing, Web sites to help coordinate building and other construction ideas.
ADC also is offering free classes this week and again in June for Los Alamos residents about Southwestern design, alternative building and other construction topics.
The classes usually are offered through Santa Fe Community College for a fee. This week they will be free.

* Southwestern Design in Energy Efficient Homes will be held 7 pm to 9 pm Tuesday
* Alternative Building Methods will be held 7 pm to 9 pm Thursday
* Strawbale Building is 10 am to noon Saturday
* A Guide to Successful Building will be held 2 pm to 5 pm Saturday
For more information and to register, call the community college at 428-1251 or ADC at 474-8388.
